This Is How It Starts:: {Washington & Oregon Maternity Photographer}

The connection between this couple was undeniable. The way they looked at each other with such love, you just know when some people are exactly meant to be together.  As they await the arrival of their first child, you can sense the strong anticipation & excitement for her to make her way into the world.

We started off their session in the studio, then were blessed with a few sunny rays (yes, in January in the PNW) so we ran outside to capture them! Thank you Tina & KC for choosing me to document this very special time in your lives, a time you will be able to look back on,  and see the connection that started it all. Congratulations to you both! Here are some of my faves….

She’s kicking!

Thank you so much for stopping by today! Your comments and “Likes” make my day, so please don’t be shy!!

Much Love ~Heidi

Meet Kara :: {Women In Business Interview}

INTERVIEW WITH KARA MAY PHOTOGRAPHY

Hi Kara! Thank you for taking the time to share with everyone a little insight into how you run your successful photography business & letting us just get to know more about you! First off tell us a little about YOU! What are a few things you love, that maybe have nothing to do with photography or your business! Thanks so much for having me! I’m excited to be a part of your Women in Business Series. So a little about me and a few things I love…. I love decorating. If I wasn’t a photographer, I’d seriously consider going back to school to become an interior designer. I love making things looks pretty in the spaces that surround me everyday.

I also have a love hate relationship with working out. I love how I feel after I work out but I dread heading to the gym. Getting fit is something I’m really committing myself to in 2012. And lastly, if sleeping were a hobby it would be pretty high on my hobby list – I can never get enough sleep. It’s nap time? I’m on it lol. In short that’s me other than being a photographer, wife and mom.

Where are you located, and how long have you been in business? I’m located in Mesa, Arizona and have been here for 3 years. I began my business in Seattle, WA in 2003 and then moved in 2006 to South Carolina where I resumed business once I was settled. I’ve moved a lot!

How did you first get started in photography? Being the youngest in my family means there aren’t a lot of pictures of me as a baby/child. Of course there are pictures but not the same as a first child. So I’ve been intrigued with pictures since I was young, excited when my parents dug up another picture of me from when I was a toddler. That’s when I realized how important pictures are. They’ll be passed down from generation to generation. And once time passes, that time is gone forever. So I’ve been obsessed with preserving it. In High School I got my first Nikon 35mm SLR camera and practiced on fruit trees in my parents backyard. But studies pushed my interest aside. When my son was born in 2002 I become obsessed with preserving every moment of his life and that’s when my passion reignited and I went back to school to learn more about photography.

Are you married? You mentioned one son, how many children do you have? How do you best manage your work time with your family time? I am very happily married and I have two children, Tyler (9 years old) and Brielle (6 years old). Balancing running a business and spending time with my family is something I endlessly work on trying to properly juggle. I love what I do but I know the time I have with my kids is so short and it’s time I won’t ever get back. So I opt to choose my family over work much of the time while still keeping my business going. That means limiting the number of sessions I do per month so I can properly focus on those clients but also have time to enjoy and be with my kids and my husband.

What camera body do you shoot with? What is your favorite lens to use? I shoot with a Canon 5D MkII {switched from Nikon once I went digital} and my favorite lenses are my 24-70L f2.8 and my 70-200L f2.8 lens. Both offer so much flexibility and sharpness!

How would you describe your photography “style”? How did you go about developing and perfecting your look? Oh tough question….I would describe my style as fun yet moody, real yet whimsical, colorful yet a little vintage. It’s really difficult to put into words your own style of work.

This sort of plays on the last question here, but “How important do you think it is for a photographer to be consistent to a style?” “Do you think it’s okay to switch post processing styles up to fit the mood of certain images, or do you think it’s better to keep things unified when displaying your work or say your website, or blog, facebook etc?” Good question. I definitely think maintaining your style is important but in keeping with your style it’s also pertinent that you edit each image or session to fit the mood. If you’re photographing a little girl dressed in a little vintage dress then I think the mood says vintage so the processing should fit. But your style should come through no matter what processing method you use. I use a variety of processing looks but I think I still have a distinct style.

What is your favorite subject(s) to photograph? My favorite subjects to photograph are children – 3 year olds particularly. They do what they want to, they’re genuine in their emotions and you always get the ‘real’ them. But I also love siblings – the interaction you can get is fun. But any age children I enjoy – toddler through teens as well as families.

What editing programs do you use ~ Would you share a little insight into your workflow? I use photoshop CS4 right now. This busy season felt I had to do something about my workflow. I took on more clients than I typically let myself and didn’t want to be buried in editing day after day. So I decided that the day of the shoot I will also edit the shoot. So my clients had their gallery up and ready the next day. It was such a relief to have it done and ready for them to view and order time sensitive things like cards and other gifts for the holidays. There are exceptions to the turn-around but for the most part I’m trying to keep to a quick turn-around and efficient workflow.

That is awesome!! Okay almost done here, promise!:) What has been your best form of advertising? How do you bring in new clientele? My best form of advertising is ‘word of mouth’. I don’t really ‘advertise’. Facebook is another great way to share recent work and attract new clients. My blog has also been great for advertising and showing snippets of my sessions and my commercial work.

And finally what are five pieces of advice or helpful hints that you would give anyone who is looking to better their businesses?

* Try everything! Experiment. You won’t know how to do something if you don’t try it.

* Even if you’ve been in this profession for a number of years your learning doesn’t stop. This industry is changing all the time and it’s pertinent to be aware of the changes and emerging software, products, and gear.

* DON’T compare yourself to other photographers. Stick to your style and perfect it.

* Get together with local photographers and develop friendships but don’t talk shop or about other local competition when you’re together. Friendships are important in this industry. It’s lonely if you’re so afraid of the competition that you keep to yourself.

* Shoot for yourself so you don’t get burned out. Make it fun so the passion and enthusiasm remains.

Love it Kara! Thank you so much Kara! It has been a pleasure featuring you this week!

Readers please leave your comments and feedback for Kara & this series if you enjoy it!!

Meet Ruthie Allen :: {Women In Business Series}

INTERVIEW WITH Ruthie Allen of RUTH EILEEN PHOTOGRAPHY | Boston, Massachusetts

Hi Ruthie! Thanks for taking some time to share a little bit about yourself as well as how you run your successful photography business! First off tell us a little about yourself! Are you married? Any children?

Thanks so much for having me Heidi!  I am married. Chris and I celebrated our second anniversary this past October. We don’t have any children but we have plenty of nieces & nephews that keep us busy!

For women I think it’s particularly hard to balance family life and work life…..How do you keep your marriage strong from the stresses of your business life?

Chris and I both feel that having a Christ centered marriage is what keeps it strong. We also make sure we take one night out of the week to “hang out”, just the two of us! Whether its grabbing dinner somewhere or just going for a drive, we always make a point to have “us” time!

How long have you been in the photography business, and what do you specialize in most?

I have been in business for 2 years. I specialize in wedding photography. I do other kinds of photography too but newly engaged couples are my favorite to work with! I love being able to capture weddings. The engagement period and wedding day is one of the most important times in a couple’s life.

What have you learned is the most important aspect of running a successful photography business?

I think the most important aspect is being able to relate well with your clients and being genuinely interested in who they are and what makes their relationship unique and special. This deeper relationship with my clients allows me to capture them for who they truly are and reflect that in their images. In turn my clients are more pleased with their experience with my business and with their finished products and are more likely to refer me to friends!:)

What are you most proud of as a business woman? What is something you might do differently with your business if you could go back in time and do it again?

I am most proud that I was able to keep my business afloat even after moving across country. My husband and I just relocated to Boston, Massachusetts in August. I had almost a year to prepare for the move. I knew I wanted to keep my business and keep doing what I loved, so I spent those months networking & marketing myself as a Boston wedding photographer. It was the most beneficial thing I could have done for my business to succeed in a new city. Literally a week after we moved to Boston I had the opportunity to 2nd shoot with another photographer in the area and that whole next month I was booked to 2nd shoot with multiple photographers. Within 4 months of living in Boston I had shot my first 2 weddings in the new city.

I wish I would have listed out my goals for my business on paper instead of just keep them inside my head. Ha! I wish I wouldn’t have been scared to push myself to achieve those goals or dreams I had hidden away in my heart. It wasn’t until last year at my first photography workshop (Branches & Light) that I first put on paper a small list of goals I wanted to achieve last year. That list I made pushed me this past year to be better and to set out to achieve those goals.

When you were first starting out, what were your top three things you did in business to bring in clients?

1) I offered special promotions or discounts.

2) I created a Facebook page for my business. This allowed me to tag clients in photos so their friends could see their pictures. Which in turn, led to their friends booking. Gotta love Facebook!:)

3) Referrals from other photographers that I 2nd shot for. It’s so important to network with photographers in your area.

Talk to us about pricing. Lots of photographers don’t have a clue where to begin on this matter. How do you put a value on your art, time & find that balance of what you should charge? Any tips?

Ah pricing. The dreaded question. Ha! Probably a lot of photographers would cringe if they heard how I priced myself at the beginning. When I first launched my business I only had 2 years of learning experience and it was all self taught. I met with 2 professional photographers to talk through questions I had. I also soaked up any photography book, blog or forum I could get my hands on. (I loved being able to do what I loved to do and that was taking pictures.) I priced myself at the beginning so that I would get booked, not just to make a lot of money. After about 6 months of being in business and multiple photographers telling me I needed to raise my prices I finally did. I had a lot of fears but I knew that if I wanted to work full-time doing what I love most I would eventually have to raise my prices. I also knew that if I wanted people to view me as a professional photographer I had to take that step and charge like a professional. A great tool to get you started on pricing is Stacy Reeves Pricing Guide which helped me a lot!

What is something you think women in the industry should NOT do?

Don’t compare yourself to others in the industry. Don’t do it! Be confident with who you are as a person and photographer. This is something that I have focused on in 2011. Figuring out what I want my business to look like and the style I want to portray through my images. Comparing yourself to others just hinders you from becoming GREAT!

Great advice! A few more questions for ya….. What do you shoot with? How about a favorite lens?

I shoot canon… 5D & 5D mark ii. My favorite lens is my 24mm 1.4L. I love me some wide angle shots!:)

What are three things you can’t live without to keep you organized?

1) Get it Together kit from Millie Hollomon – I bought it last year and it hugely affected the way I organize my business… It is AHmazing!

2) iCal – I am an Apple junkie and I totally couldn’t live without the ability to sink all my devices and especially iCal.

3) ShootQ - I just signed up in December and am already seeing the benefits of it… yay for staying organized!:)

And finally, what are three pieces of advice or things that you have experienced you can give business owners who want to better themselves & their businesses?

Specifically for wedding photographers, don’t give up! You are going to be frustrated and ask yourself multiple times why you got into this industry but always remember what first made you fall in love with weddings!:)Set goals for yourself personally & professionally. Seeing your goals written out can be scary but it’s so rewarding when you start crossing things off your list!:)Network! Become friends with others in the industry. Learn from each other, push each other to be better photographers.

Thank you for taking time to share some business wisdom with everyone this week Ruthie!

Heidi, thank you so much for asking me to be apart of this!  I had so much fun!

Meet Tara Swain :: {Women In Business Series}

Welcome to 2012 everyone! Here to jump-start our line up of Women In Business interviews is Tara Swain! Have a looksey, don’t forget to leave  some love in the comments if you enjoy this series!!

INTERVIEW WITH TARA SWAIN PHOTOGRAPHY
—————————————————————

Hi Tara! Thanks for taking a little time to  share with everyone a bit about yourself and how you run your successful photography business! First let’s get to know you a bit, tell us a little about YOU!
Thank you! I’m honored to have been asked!:)Well I’m a wife of 6 years and we have a beautiful little girl who just turned 2.

Where are you located, and how did you first get into photography?
I’m based out of Paris, Texas, where I’ve lived since 2001. It’s a small northeast Texas town about 100 miles east of Dallas. Photography has been a hobby of mine since I was about 8 or 9 years old. After I graduated high school I really jumped back into it. Family friends started asking me to take family photos of photos of their children. This quickly led to friends of friends (who I didn’t know) contacting me and I ended up falling into a part time business. I immediately got my tax id and set up a  small website for my “part time business”. But God apparently had other plans because the “part time” didn’t last anytime, I began running a busy full time business on  part time hours. I was forced to make a choice, so I ended up having to leave my full time job later that year to have enough time for my photography business.

How long have you been in business?
Officially since January 2008

What areas/subjects would you say you specialize in?
As far as portrait sessions go, I’d say child sessions. I love doing the themed concept sessions with the older kiddos but I have to admit that the 5-8 month chubby babies are my absolute favorites!:)

Are you an on location photographer for newborns or do you have a studio space?
I am primarily on location~ I LOVE natural light. But I do have a studio space that I use for newborns and children.

How do you separate and distinguish yourself from all of the other photographers out there?
I believe the way I run my business, which is very personal, and the creativity I put into my sessions.

When shooting weddings, what is your favorite moment? What really gets to you, makes you laugh or perhaps makes you choke up?

I LOVE the first look. The mix of nervousness and excitement is overwhelming. There have been a lot of times where I have to fight back the tears.

What is your camera of choice? Favorite lenses?
I shoot with both the Canon 5D & the Canon 5D mk II , but I love the flexibility the mk II gives me with the high ISO. Favorite lenses would be my 50 1.2, 35 1.4 and 85 1.2

Okay a little business talk now;)…. How do you find/target clients who are look at your art & value your work and not just consider the bottom line price?
Truthfully, I don’t do a lot of advertising. The only advertising I do is occasionally with our local paper if they have a special edition in the newspaper or local run magazine. But 99.9% of my business comes from word of mouth.

And finally, what three pieces of wisdom would you leave anyone either starting out in business, or trying to better themselves as business people?

1. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing, find your style and concentrate on doing what YOU love.

2. Equipment isn’t everything. The photographer and the talent is what makes the image, not just the equipment.

3. Word of mouth will always be the very best form of getting your name out there.

Thanks for sharing with us this week Tara! Check out Tara’s Facebook page too!

PS!! Tara has ONE spot  that just became available for her much desired workshop taking place in Feb! If you are interested contact her ASAP for the details!!

BEST OF 2011 :: {Washington & Oregon Photographer}

2011 was another amazing year!  I am so grateful to each and every one of you ~ Thank you for allowing me to document your special moments. Thank you for the laughs, the tears, the honest emotions that make me love my job even more. You treated me as a friend and not just the “photographer”. I’ve learned so much this year and I am so excited for what lies ahead in 2012. In no particular order, here is a loaded…and I mean LOADED…. glimpse into a year that was packed with meaningful moments….hope you enjoy.

(I understand if you need to get up and stretch mid way through this!;))

Happy New Year everyone! See you in 2012!!

Love & Happiness to you. God bless you all in the coming year!!

FEEL FREE TO LEAVE A COMMENT BELOW telling me YOUR favorite photo from this post!!

Give & Let Give.

I recently experienced the feeling of how great giving truly is. This is just a small thing, but I thought I’d share my little story…

Last month I was out running errands by myself while my husband kept the kids. It was about lunch time so I thought I’d stop in at a “fast food” sushi wheel place for a bite to eat. I walked in, looked around for a seat and asked a girl sitting alone if I could join her. She smiled and said “Sure”. We made small talk,  she worked across the street at a Burger King and was on her lunch break. After about 5 minuets of chatting, another girl entered the restaurant. She too was  by herself, and sits about 2 chairs from me. I asked her if she’d like to join us, being that  we were all alone, and it’s no fun to eat by yourself! She replied, “Sure, thanks”! (I realize that I probably sound cooky at this point….I won’t deny it.) So we continued our small talk, sometimes elevating it to medium talk. In our short amount of time I gathered that the “Burger King” girl was only eating the $1.00 plates and being very selective with her choices, she made remarks that she’d like to try some other dishes, but it really just added up to quickly. I finished and paid for my meal, told them all to have a great Thanksgiving, thanked them for the company and said goodbye. I walked next door to the frozen yogurt stand for a little desert to top off my lunch (I can’t resist that place). As I was in there I really felt like I should go back and do something more than just talk to those girls, something to just bless them. I walked back into the sushi restaurant and handed them enough money to cover their plates and some extra for them to try out new dishes if they wished.

Now I’m not saying that I’m made of money here. But to see the look on these girls faces was so amazing. They were so taken back by a simple act of giving kindness. They couldn’t believe it. I didn’t get their names, I wasn’t there to hand them a business card or talk about myself. I wanted to genuinely impact their days for the better. Maybe they will pay it forward…maybe they won’t. What matters is MAN it felt good to give.

Next year I’d like to go to the grocery store, buy my essentials and come prepared to pay for the persons groceries in front of me….just because.

I hope you consider spreading an act of kindness this season. A smile, a small chat with someone sitting alone, picking up the tab for strangers….make a difference in someones day.

Much Love,

~Heidi

Happy Holiday’s everyone.

Pass it on, press the LIKE button!!
