INTERVIEW WITH TARA SWAIN PHOTOGRAPHY
—————————————————————

Hi Tara! Thanks for taking a little time to  share with everyone a bit about yourself and how you run your successful photography business! First let’s get to know you a bit, tell us a little about YOU!
Thank you! I’m honored to have been asked!:)Well I’m a wife of 6 years and we have a beautiful little girl who just turned 2.

Where are you located, and how did you first get into photography?
I’m based out of Paris, Texas, where I’ve lived since 2001. It’s a small northeast Texas town about 100 miles east of Dallas. Photography has been a hobby of mine since I was about 8 or 9 years old. After I graduated high school I really jumped back into it. Family friends started asking me to take family photos of photos of their children. This quickly led to friends of friends (who I didn’t know) contacting me and I ended up falling into a part time business. I immediately got my tax id and set up a  small website for my “part time business”. But God apparently had other plans because the “part time” didn’t last anytime, I began running a busy full time business on  part time hours. I was forced to make a choice, so I ended up having to leave my full time job later that year to have enough time for my photography business.

How long have you been in business?
Officially since January 2008

What areas/subjects would you say you specialize in?
As far as portrait sessions go, I’d say child sessions. I love doing the themed concept sessions with the older kiddos but I have to admit that the 5-8 month chubby babies are my absolute favorites!:)

Are you an on location photographer for newborns or do you have a studio space?
I am primarily on location~ I LOVE natural light. But I do have a studio space that I use for newborns and children.

How do you separate and distinguish yourself from all of the other photographers out there?
I believe the way I run my business, which is very personal, and the creativity I put into my sessions.

When shooting weddings, what is your favorite moment? What really gets to you, makes you laugh or perhaps makes you choke up?

I LOVE the first look. The mix of nervousness and excitement is overwhelming. There have been a lot of times where I have to fight back the tears.

What is your camera of choice? Favorite lenses?
I shoot with both the Canon 5D & the Canon 5D mk II , but I love the flexibility the mk II gives me with the high ISO. Favorite lenses would be my 50 1.2, 35 1.4 and 85 1.2

Okay a little business talk now;)…. How do you find/target clients who are look at your art & value your work and not just consider the bottom line price?
Truthfully, I don’t do a lot of advertising. The only advertising I do is occasionally with our local paper if they have a special edition in the newspaper or local run magazine. But 99.9% of my business comes from word of mouth.

And finally, what three pieces of wisdom would you leave anyone either starting out in business, or trying to better themselves as business people?

1. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing, find your style and concentrate on doing what YOU love.

2. Equipment isn’t everything. The photographer and the talent is what makes the image, not just the equipment.

3. Word of mouth will always be the very best form of getting your name out there.

Thanks for sharing with us this week Tara! Check out Tara’s Facebook page too!

Give & Let Give.

I recently experienced the feeling of how great giving truly is. This is just a small thing, but I thought I’d share my little story…

Last month I was out running errands by myself while my husband kept the kids. It was about lunch time so I thought I’d stop in at a “fast food” sushi wheel place for a bite to eat. I walked in, looked around for a seat and asked a girl sitting alone if I could join her. She smiled and said “Sure”. We made small talk,  she worked across the street at a Burger King and was on her lunch break. After about 5 minuets of chatting, another girl entered the restaurant. She too was  by herself, and sits about 2 chairs from me. I asked her if she’d like to join us, being that  we were all alone, and it’s no fun to eat by yourself! She replied, “Sure, thanks”! (I realize that I probably sound cooky at this point….I won’t deny it.) So we continued our small talk, sometimes elevating it to medium talk. In our short amount of time I gathered that the “Burger King” girl was only eating the $1.00 plates and being very selective with her choices, she made remarks that she’d like to try some other dishes, but it really just added up to quickly. I finished and paid for my meal, told them all to have a great Thanksgiving, thanked them for the company and said goodbye. I walked next door to the frozen yogurt stand for a little desert to top off my lunch (I can’t resist that place). As I was in there I really felt like I should go back and do something more than just talk to those girls, something to just bless them. I walked back into the sushi restaurant and handed them enough money to cover their plates and some extra for them to try out new dishes if they wished.

Now I’m not saying that I’m made of money here. But to see the look on these girls faces was so amazing. They were so taken back by a simple act of giving kindness. They couldn’t believe it. I didn’t get their names, I wasn’t there to hand them a business card or talk about myself. I wanted to genuinely impact their days for the better. Maybe they will pay it forward…maybe they won’t. What matters is MAN it felt good to give.

Next year I’d like to go to the grocery store, buy my essentials and come prepared to pay for the persons groceries in front of me….just because.

I hope you consider spreading an act of kindness this season. A smile, a small chat with someone sitting alone, picking up the tab for strangers….make a difference in someones day.

Much Love,

~Heidi

Happy Holiday’s everyone.

Kolton 2012 Senior :: {Washington Senior Photographer}

Well happy day after Thanksgiving aka BLACK FRIDAY! Hope you are all enjoying the Holiday weekend so far.

It was such a pleasure meeting this family. We started off with a few family moments in some gorgeous autumn light….and then switched gears into senior modeling mode. I really enjoyed the urban feel of this session, we were able to walk around and let our imaginations get the best of us with all of the different textures, and buildings. Anyways, enough of my yada yada ~ check out a few of my favorites of Kolton & his fam.

Thanks for stopping by, come again soon!  Much love & happiness to you. ~Heidi
